The Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority and the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center join the Francis family and the Xavier University of Louisiana community in mourning the passing of Dr. Norman C. Francis, an extraordinary educator, civil rights icon and steadfast champion for opportunity and equity.
As President of Xavier University of Louisiana for 47 years, the nation’s longest serving university president, Dr. Francis championed higher education and the advancement of the medical profession by advocating for expanded access and opportunities for pre-medical students. He transformed Xavier into a national model of academic excellence and leadership development, producing top graduates in medicine, pharmacy and the sciences. His work created scholarships and pathways that strengthened not only students from New Orleans but from communities across the nation.
“On behalf of the Convention Center staff, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Dr. Francis,” said Jim Cook, Chief Executive Officer and President. “While his leadership extended far beyond Xavier’s campus, New Orleanians will forever celebrate his role in rebuilding the university after Hurricane Katrina and in expanding enrollment, with a steadfast commitment to academic excellence. His advocacy for student enrichment and opportunities in medicine leaves an enduring mark on our city by shaping a more inclusive and resilient workforce.”
Dr. Francis’ influence has created a stronger New Orleans that values education, access, and opportunity as pillars of progress. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
